For over a decade, St John’s Anglican College has been holding an annual Early Years conference on a myriad of different topics relevant to best practice teaching in this important part of the school. Topics have ranged from aspects of Literacy, Numeracy and the Arts to the impact of the digital age on our young people.

Each year the conference is eagerly attended by delegates from Brisbane, Toowoomba and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, who network and share with like-minded teachers. This year was no exception and we had the largest number of conference delegates since the Conference’s inception, who came together to hear about Exploring How STEAM Enhances the Early Years Curriculum. Our keynote Presenter was Laura Bain from Matthew Flinders Anglican College who gave an inspiring address on “The What, Why and How of STEAM in the Early Years” and also a fabulous hands-on workshop later in the day “Playing with STEAM”. Both were incredibly relevant to Early Years Teaching and Learning and both contained information and ideas that could be implemented straight away by the delegates upon returning to their schools. The buzz in the room as teachers ‘had-a-go’ at trying out these activities was electric and once satisfied the tasks were manageable, started to formulate ways these lessons learned could be transferred to their own classes. STEAM learning, not just STEM, will be an incredibly important skill for our future generations so we need to start them learning about the concepts now.

Our entire Early Years staff at St John’s participated in several hands-on learning activities that we now look forward to being able to recreate in our classrooms.  The information on current trends in this important area of STEAM was eagerly absorbed by the teachers from our Kindy to Year 2 classrooms and will assist in creating some exciting lessons within the Australian Curriculum areas of Science, Maths, Design and Digital Technology and The Arts. We are fortunate to have many of the resources already, and our STEM teacher Mrs Gerstner is assisting teachers to bring some of these resources, activities and ideas to life within our classrooms which is very exciting for both the teachers and their students. We have all learnt that there are some excellent ideas and activities at our fingertips to enhance our Early Years Curriculum.
