In an evening brimming with enchantment, three talented students from St John’s took centre stage in late August as their compositions were brought to life by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO). Bao Tran Nguyen, Bella Kennedy, and Isaac Wang participated in the QSO’s composer workshops earlier this year and saw their creations flourish into captivating musical pieces.

Inspired by the mesmerising works of indigenous artist Susan Rey, the compositions were a harmonious fusion of creativity and cultural appreciation. The orchestral interpretations of their compositions filled the air with an enchanting atmosphere, leaving the audience spellbound.

The QSO Connect Compose Project, a unique initiative, offers secondary school students the chance to delve into the realm of orchestral composition beyond the confines of their academic curriculum. Under the expert guidance of composers Craig Allister Young and Timothy Tate, as well as the QSO musicians, students were immersed in a creative journey, culminating in the opportunity to compose for the QSO Connect ensemble.

Conducted by the talented Katie Betts, the QSO Connect ensemble skillfully brought the 2023 student compositions to life at the QSO Studio, located in the ABC Building at South Bank. The performance served as a testament to the dedication and passion these young composers poured into their musical endeavours.

St John’s takes immense pride in the achievements of Bao Tran Nguyen, Bella Kennedy, and Isaac Wang. Their participation in the QSO Composer Workshops and performance underscores the school’s commitment to fostering artistic talent and providing students with extraordinary opportunities to shine.
